The complete set consists of 2 days worth of real-time keyframed animation by Animation Supervisor/Tutor Rob Hemmings. He recorded his progress as he animated, nothing is missed out or reworked, the videos are completely real-time and include mistakes and happy accidents as and when they occur.
The videos cover all the specific areas of interest to a creature animator including use of reference, animation paths, blocking, working with timewarps, working with locators and smoothing techniques. (NB this tutorial does not include animation of the walk cycle used in this sequence or application of this cycle to a path using QPAS - these tutorials can be purchased at the store - however, use of the path system (QPAS) is demonstrated).
All the videos that constitute this tutorial can be bought as one for the cost of £139.95GBP

3. Quadraped Path Animation System (QPAS):Mel Scripted
Price - £49.95
“We bought the script earlier this year to work on Primeval new world and it’s been great so far. Huge time saver.Thankyou for writing it “-Adam, atmosphere-vfx.com
“Hi Rob I’ve bought QPAS some months ago..AWESOME..I love this script…Thanks”-Gabriele
“I’ve tested QPAS animation script and it’s simply amazing, so helpful ! Thanks.” -Lukas
“Thanks again for you continued assistance and awesome product support.” -James
Customers of QPAS include:
Atmosphere VFX, Vancouver. Double Negative, London. Aardman Studios, Bristol. Jagex Games Studio, Cambridge. Moving Picture Company, London. ZooVFX, London
Convert your quadruped (will work with biped rigs also) cycles into complex animated sequences in minutes. This script builds a path instantly and then attaches your animation cycle to it. The path can then be shaped to fit your scenes environment, see demonstration movie below:
“This technique has been a fantastic time saver for me over the years” -Rob
QPAS is fully integrated into the Maya menu work flow.
The script will run on any version of Maya, any rig and will give you amazing control of a single cycle repetition, or as many repetitions that you have animated in your cycle.
The Path System technique provides a quick and easy way to create complex animation, and was used extensively in the creation of these animations. Further animation work was required for some actions (i.e tiger poses during jump down) once the path animation had been baked out.
Drench – Pheasant Rodeo. Three Pony – Opening walking shots and various moonwalking shots.
Volvo – Easter Island Crabs
Esuvee (Keepitonallfours) – Esuvee Rodeo.
Happy Potter – Blue Bird.
10,000BC – Tiger, Vulture in flight, Terror Birds.
Hellboy 2 – Flying and walking Tooth Fairies, motion tests for Golden Army robot.
John Carter of Mars – motion tests for Thoat.
Using QPAS it took me approximately 10 minutes to go from a 45 frame cycling animation of this Allosaur, to the sequence you see here. I used the QPAS offsets to get the head turns and body weight shift during the pause, and the QPAS re-timing curve to achieve the pause.
The original 45 frame cyle can still be edited.
You can see foot slip as the dino gets closer to camera, I would normally tidy this once QPAS has been baked. Think what I could have achieved if I’d spent another 15 minutes on it!
